Motorola MC9090 Warm/Cold Boot Procedure
From time to time, your MC9090 handheld may get stuck on a strange screen, have application problems, or need hardware drivers reinitialized if certain hardware has stopped functioning. For example, reinitializing the scan driver if the scan engine is not detected.
A common resolution to these MC9090 problems is to try to perform a warm boot on the device. Performing a warm boot on a Motorola MC9090 will retain all persistent settings, while a cold boot will restore a MC9090 back to factory default. Follow the steps below to warm or cold boot your scanner based on its Operating System.
Warm/Cold Boot For Windows CE 5.0 Devices:
There are two reset functions, warm boot and cold boot.
- A warm boot restarts the mobile computer by closing all running programs. We recommend trying a warm boot first.
- A cold boot also restarts the mobile computer, but erases all stored records and entries in RAM. Data saved in flash memory or a memory card is not lost. In addition, a cold boot returns formats, preferences and other settings to the factory default settings.
Perform a warm boot first. This restarts the mobile computer and saves all stored records and entries. If the mobile computer still does not respond, perform a cold boot.
Performing a Warm Boot
Hold down the Power button for approximately five seconds. As soon as the mobile computer starts to perform a warm boot, release the Power button.
Performing a Cold Boot
A cold boot restarts the mobile computer and erases all user stored records and entries that are not saved in flash memory (Application and Platform folders) or a memory card. Never perform a cold boot unless a warm boot does not solve the problem. Caution: Do not hold down any key, other than the Power button during a rest. Performing a cold boot restores formats, preferences and other settings to the default settings.
Note: Any data previously synchronized with a computer can be restored during the next ActiveSync operation.
To Perform a Cold Boot:
- Press the primary battery release on the mobile computer to partially eject the battery from the device.
- While the battery is partially released, simultaneously press and release both the handle trigger and the Power button.
- Push the battery to fully re-insert it into the mobile computer. One audible click can be heard as the battery is fully inserted.
- The mobile computer initializes.
- Calibrate the screen.
Warm/Cold Boot for Windows Mobile 5.0 Devices
On Windows Mobile 5.0 devices, you can also perform a warm boot and/or cold boot if you’re experiencing issues with your MC9090s.
- A warm boot restarts the mobile computer and closes all running programs.
- A cold boot also restarts the mobile computer and closes all running programs but also resets Real-Time-Clock (RTC). In addition it returns formats, preferences and other settings to the factory default settings.
Data saved in flash memory or a memory card is not lost. We recommend always performing a warm boot first.
A cold boot restarts the MC9090 mobile computer. The operating system and all applications are restarted. File storage is preserved but settings and configuration will be erased. The Real-Time-Clock (RTC) will be reset. Only perform a cold boot if a warm boot does not solve the problem.
To perform a cold boot:
- Press the primary battery release on the mobile computer to partially eject the battery from the device.
- On an MC9090-G unit, while the battery is partially released, simultaneously press and release the trigger and Power button.
- On an MC9090-K or MC9090-S device, while the battery is partially released, simultaneously press and release the left scan button and the Power button.

- The mobile computer initializes.
- Calibrate the screen.
