Intermec CK3 Warm Cold Boot Procedure
Here are three ways how to reset a Honeywell or Intermec CK3x to factory defaults:
- Warm boot – this will restart the device and retain all persistent settings
- Cold boot – this will restore a CK3 to factory defaults
- Clean boot – this completely wipes the device and loads only essential files and applications (not recommended for end users to try)
More details on how to reset a CK3 below. These instructions apply to CK3x, CK3r, CK3CNi.
If your Intermec CK3, Intermec CK3X or Honeywell CK3x scanner isn’t working, have you tried reverting to default factory settings?
Freezing screens, application problems, and missing scan drivers often need to be reinitialized if the device has stopped functioning.
A common resolution to these problems is to perform a warm boot, cold boot, or clean boot on the device (also known as a factory or hard reset). Performing a warm boot will retain all persistent settings, while a cold boot will restore the handheld device back to factory default. For other questions, refer to our CK3 Knowledge Base or download the CK3 instruction manual.
Warm Booting Your Intermec CK3
If the mobile computer has a fully charged battery, but does not resume after you press the power key, or if the CK3 is locked up, you may need to reboot the handheld.
Here is how to perform a CK3 warm boot:
- Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to reset your scanner.
- Alternatively, from the SmartSystems console, right click the Intermec CK3 and select Intermec Power Tools > Warm Boot Device.
The CK3 will then shut down, restart, and go through the initialization process.
Cold Booting Your Intermec CK3
If you have an application that is locked or does not respond to a warm boot, follow the procedure below. Caution: Performing a cold boot may result in loss of data and/or settings. Cached disk data may not be saved resulting in transactional data being lost.
Here’s how to perform a CK3 cold boot and reset to factory default settings:
- Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds to suspend the Intermec CK3 .
- Remove the battery.
- Use the stylus to press the reset button in the battery compartment.
- Replace the battery.
Clean Booting Your Intermec CK3
If your Intermec CK3 does not warm or cold boot, you may need to perform a clean boot. Caution: this is a last resort and not recommended for end users. A clean boot should only be performed by qualified individuals with access to setup and configuration files and processes. When you clean boot a CK3, the unit will only load files and applications that are absolutely required by the operating system.
How to Clean Boot a CK3:
- Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds to suspend the device.
- Remove the battery.
- Use the stylus to press the reset button in the battery compartment (see illustration above).
- Replace the battery.
- Press and hold both the power button and the PTT button.
- Continue to hold power and PTT until the “Clean boot the system?” prompt appears on the screen.
- Release the two buttons, read the message, and press the appropriate button to either proceed with the clean boot or cancel the clean boot.
Note: The clean boot process erases the Intermec CK3 memory, including all applications and data files in the object store. To preserve application through a clean boot, you must store them in a Flash File Store.
A Honeywell / Intermec CK3 is built to last and will work great for many years. But even the best mobile computers need service. CK3s are a specialty of ours. Here are more details about CarltonCare Service Plans.
