Intermec CK3 Warm/Cold Boot Procedure

From time to time your Intermec CK3 may get stuck on a strange screen, have application problems, or need hardware drivers reinitialized if certain hardware has stopped functioning. One example may include reinitializing the scan driver if the scan engine is not detected.

A common resolution to these problems is to try to perform a warm boot, cold boot, or clean boot on the device. Performing a warm boot will retain all persistent settings, while a cold boot will restore the device back to factory default. There are three ways to reset your Intermec CK3.

  • Warm Boot
  • Cold Boot
  • Clean Boot

Warm Booting Your Intermec CK3

If the device has a fully charged battery, but does not resume after you press the power key, or if the CK3 is locked up, you may need to reboot the handheld.

  • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.

  • From the SmartSystems console, right click the Intermec CK3 and select Intermec Power Tools > Warm Boot Device.

The CK3 will then shut down, restart, and go through the initialization process.

Cold Booting Your Intermec CK3

If you have an application that is locked or does not respond to a warm boot, follow the below procedure to perform a cold boot. Caution: Performing a cold boot may result in loss of data and/or settings. Cached disk data may not be saved resulting in transactional data being lost.

  • Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds to suspend the Intermec CK3 .
  • Remove the battery.
  • Use the stylus to press the reset button in the battery compartment.

Rest Button

  • Replace the battery.

Clean Booting Your Intermec CK3

If your Intermec CK3 does not warm or cold boot, you may need to perform a clean boot. When you clean boot a CK3, the unit will only load files and applications that are absolutely required by the operating system. A clean boot should only be performed by qualified individuals with access to setup and configuration files and processes:

  • Press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds to suspend the device.
  • Remove the battery.
  • Use the stylus to press the reset button in the battery compartment (see illustration above).
  • Replace the battery.
  • Press and hold both the power button and the PTT button.
  • Continue to hold power and PTT until the “Clean boot the system?” prompt appears on the screen.
  • Release the two buttons, read the message, and press the appropriate button to either proceed with the clean boot or cancel the clean boot.

Note: The clean boot process erases the Intermec CK3 memory, including all applications and data files in the object store. To preserve application through a clean boot, you must store them in a Flash File Store.
