HOLLAND TOWNSHIP — A downturn in the economy has resulted in an upturn in business for Carlton Technologies, a company that sells and services reconditions bar code scanners and data collection device.

“With companies looking to save money and boost efficiency, we have seen a huge increase in demand that has driven growth here by 150 percent during the last three years,” CEO and company president Ryan Bracken said.

Bracken put 2012 sales in the $10 million to $20 million range. Carlton Technologies operates from a 13,000-square-foot plant on the north side of Holland at 4518 128th Ave. reworking and selling certified preowned handheld scanning and data devices that work and look like new.

“We can take a warehouse scanner that’s pretty beat up and bring it up to operating specs, paint it, give it a new keyboard and it looks nearly brand new,” he said.

The 13-year-old firm also sells service contracts for quick turn around repair and return of the devices to keep everything running smooth at businesses ranging from grocery stores, to shoe companies and freight lines.

Among its clients are major companies as Spartan Stores, Costco, Wolverine Worldwide, U-Haul and ABC Warehouse.

“Like everyone else, 2008 was a challenging year for us. But, we got right-sized and fine tuned our systems and services to be ready for the rebound,” he said.

Bracken said companies buying rebuilt certified preowned equipment can save up to half the $3,000 cost of buying new.

Carlton Technologies gets previously owned scanners and data collection devices from a variety of sources including purchases of old equipment from clients, buying products coming off lease and from original equipment suppliers who are selling new products.

“They’ll buy back 1,000 units to sell 1,000 new ones and sell us the older units,” Bracken said.

His company also provides service contracts to companies that need quick turnaround on repairs to mobile computing devices, handheld and fixed location scanners.

“The level of service Carlton Technologies provides is essential to our company both by reducing downtime for our 500 plus devices and in saving us money,” Haworth Inc. Computing Services manager Jim Morse said.

Bracken said with the company is considering expanding into smartphone repairs.

While giving a tour of his company, Carlton Technologies owner and CEO Ryan Bracken held up two computerized scanners — the type of device used in warehouses, grocery stores and delivery services everywhere.

One looked beat-up, the other, after being cleaned, re-painted and fitted with a new keyboard, looked nearly brand new.

“A lot of that is removing, for the consumer, the stigma of used equipment,” Bracken said.

The company operating out of a Holland Township location — is growing as more businesses turn to having existing electronics serviced, or buying re-furbished electronics, instead of purchasing expensive new models.

“In a softer economy, companies tend to look for alternatives to what they’re doing,” Bracken said.

The company this week announced a new multimedia website and slogan — “We Make Things Work. Better” — as a way of branding itself as a smart choice for businesses everywhere.

“We’ve also done some re-branding for our service products and service plans,” Bracken said. The company sells service contracts for mobile computing devices, such as the handheld scanners, as well as doing one-time repairs and selling refurbished devices.

The service work is time-sensitive — “these devices tend to be mission-critical devices,” Bracken says — so Carlton guarantees a certain turnaround time for customers to get their devices up and running again.

“It’s a constant flow of equipment,” he said. Technicians’ workstations are surrounded by boxes of parts so they can work on the devices without getting up or searching for the right part.

The business strategy seems to be working.

Carlton Technologies this week announced 150 percent growth in total revenue over the past three years. And since Carlton moved to Holland Township in February 2007, the number of repairs performed per year has increased by more than 130 percent.

Also since coming to Holland, Carlton has picked up a number of local customers, including Spartan Stores, Gentex, Steelcase and Haworth.

“The level of service Carlton Technologies provides is essential to our company both by reducing downtime for our 500-plus devices and in saving us money,” said Jim Morse of Haworth.

January 16, 2012 (Holland, MI) – In today’s economy reducing downtime for mission-critical equipment is essential for any company. With this in mind, Carlton Technologies Inc., a rapidly growing North American leader in service and sales of certified pre-owned mobile computing devices, has repositioned itself, with a new look and website, to reinforce its commitment to bringing concierge level service to companies in the manufacturing, retail, transportation and logistics, and warehousing and distribution industries.

Carlton Technologies is dedicated to delivering better service, more economically than any of its competitors. This commitment has resulted in accelerated the landing and retention of many industry-leading clients as well as an exceptional reputation in the field.

“Our repositioning includes an increased focus on our core strengths, including service, sales and integration of certified pre-owned mobile computer equipment, customer service, cost-efficiency and environmental responsibility,” says Ryan Bracken, Carlton President and CEO. “We offer an unsurpassed database of knowledge; better trained people who truly care and who work in state-of-the-art facilities; a unique seven-step equipment repair process honed over more than a decade; and an absolute commitment to our customers’ success. Ultimately, we do make things work better for the companies we serve, so it makes great sense for us to identify ourselves with that phrase.”

For thirteen years, Carlton Technologies has been servicing and selling a full range of certified pre-owned data collection devices, as well as mobile and stationary barcode printers. These devices are in use on plant floors, in distribution centers, and on the road by drivers and field sales representatives.

“Our customers can be confident that their mission-critical equipment will always work for their business, that they will never have issues with downtime, and that their employees can succeed on the road and in the workplace with our broad selection of pre-owned hardware,” says Bracken. “In addition, refurbishing electronic computing devices helps companies reduce the amount of waste they send to landfills, so we are also helping them be more environmentally responsible.”

As part of a rebranding strategy aimed to better communicate its better products, superior service, efficiency and value to customers, Carlton’s new website at www.carltontechnologies.com is designed to support Carlton’s renewed commitment to reducing customers’ downtime, lowering their costs and decreasing their environmental footprint.

“At Carlton Technologies we have always been known as being the best in the industry at products and service. Our new website helps us deliver superior service by assisting customers to find information about our products and services better, get in touch with us more easily, and focus on other core elements of their businesses,” says Bracken.
